Chelsea Handler returning to standup on HBO Max after 6-year hiatus

Chelsea Handler is finally returning to stand-up comedy, because she now feels she finally has ‘something important to say.’

The outspoken comic and TV host, 45, is set to grace the stage in a new comedy special after a six-year hiatus, following her 2014 Netflix special Uganda Be Kidding Me.

Handler posted about the development on her Instagram account on Thursday, captioning a news clipping with, ‘Hold on to your banana bread, I have a real announcement.

‘I will be returning to stand-up with a special on @hbomax! I didn’t want to return to stand-up until I had something important to say. I do now,’ Chelsea concluded. 

The yet-to-be-titled special will stream on new platform HBO Max, which is set to unveil on May 27.

And it comes after the publication of Chelsea’s best-selling memoir, Life Will Be The Death Of Me.  

‘No one makes me laugh like Chelsea, and we are thrilled to partner with her on this long awaited return to stand-up,’ Suzanna Makkos, executive vice president of original comedy and animation for HBO Max told The Hollywood Reporter.

Her last time on the standup stage: Chelsea’s 2014 Netflix special was called Uganda Be Kidding Me

‘We feel lucky to be able to share with our audience her evolution and personal growth that she relays so beautifully in this hour special.’

Handler herself added, ‘I’m absolutely delighted to be doing this with HBO Max and always excited to be reunited with [chairman of WarnerMedia Entertainment] Bob Greenblatt. One of the only executives I can never have sex with.’

Along with Uganda Be Kidding Me, Chelsea had completed a number of projects for Netflix before her move to HBO Max, including talk show Chelsea, docuseries Chelsea Does, as well as a documentary film titled Hello, Privilege. It’s Me, Chelsea.

And prior to that, she was one of the sole female late night hosts for eight seasons on her E! chat show Chelsea Lately.

According to THR, Handler’s new special will focus on ‘family, friendships, her first foray into therapy and reflections on her journey toward self-awareness with the help of her reliable companion, cannabis.’ 

And as a parallel to her upcoming special on HBO Max, Chelsea has been keeping busy with her bi-monthly nude book reviews and photoshoots on Instagram, which see her posing nude with strategically placed literature she recommends along with the hashtags #GetLitWithChelsea and #NakedLit.
